Tourist Attractions

  • THE BUDDHA TEMPLE

The temple stands as the prime attraction of the town owing to its high sacred significance for devotees of Lord Buddha. This temple marks the place where Lord Buddha descended after returning from the Tushita heaven. The temple enshrines a statue of Lord Buddha.

  • THE TEMPLE OF MAHADEVI

This small and beautiful temple is dedicated to Maya Devi, the mother of Gautam Buddha. The Maya Devi is believed as the Goddess of fertility by the people here. The sculptures from the Mahayana age can be seen on the walls of the temple.

  • ASHOKAN ELEPHANT PILLAR

This rare Ashokan Elephant Pillar is of great archaeological importance. The pillar was found during the excavations near the temple site. The elephants instead of lions are the special attraction of the pillar. The elephant is believed to be symbolizing the white elephant, of which Maya Devi had a vision during the time of conception of Siddhartha (Lord Buddha).

  • BUDHA PURNIMA

Sankisa is regarded as an ancient holy Buddhist pilgrim site. It is believed that Lord Gautam Buddha the founder of Buddhism descended from heaven after preaching his mother and thus the famous stupa signifies this descent.
