    1. Because I m planning a trip to Puccini s home town of Lucca, Italy, I wanted to learn about this famous composer I found the book tedious It might make an excellent text book for a college level course on Puccini for music majors But for the casual reader like myself, it was way too detailed, had few human interest anecdotes and no warmth I hope to find another Puccini biography that will be interesting, as well as informative If you know of one, let me know.

    2. For the general reader, this is an excellent introduction to Puccini s life and at the same time an interesting overview of the world of Italian opera and its intrigues from the 1880 s through 1924 Phillips Matz, who once wrote for Opera News, has genuine affection for the composer and carefully traces the course of his career from one opera to the next At the end, the reader has a good sense of Puccini both as a man and an artist.
