    About Author

    1. The name Poe brings to mind images of murderers and madmen, premature burials, and mysterious women who return from the dead His works have been in print since 1827 and include such literary classics as The Tell Tale Heart, The Raven, and The Fall of the House of Usher This versatile writer s oeuvre includes short stories, poetry, a novel, a textbook, a book of scientific theory, and hundreds of essays and book reviews He is widely acknowledged as the inventor of the modern detective story and an innovator in the science fiction genre, but he made his living as America s first great literary critic and theoretician Poe s reputation today rests primarily on his tales of terror as well as on his haunting lyric poetry.Just as the bizarre characters in Poe s stories have captured the public imagination so too has Poe himself He is seen as a morbid, mysterious figure lurking in the shadows of moonlit cemeteries or crumbling castles This is the Poe of legend But much of what we know about Poe is wrong, the product of a biography written by one of his enemies in an attempt to defame the author s name. The real Poe was born to traveling actors in Boston on January 19, 1809 Edgar was the second of three children His other brother William Henry Leonard Poe would also become a poet before his early death, and Poe s sister Rosalie Poe would grow up to teach penmanship at a Richmond girls school Within three years of Poe s birth both of his parents had died, and he was taken in by the wealthy tobacco merchant John Allan and his wife Frances Valentine Allan in Richmond, Virginia while Poe s siblings went to live with other families Mr Allan would rear Poe to be a businessman and a Virginia gentleman, but Poe had dreams of being a writer in emulation of his childhood hero the British poet Lord Byron Early poetic verses found written in a young Poe s handwriting on the backs of Allan s ledger sheets reveal how little interest Poe had in the tobacco business. For information, please see enpedia wiki Edgar_al

    1. The 19th century witnessed an explosion of imagination After centuries dominated by church religion and the 18th century s age of reason, men and women began exploring new ways of looking at and experiencing the world, including the world of the unseen Esoteric psychic practices such as s ances, channeling and hypnosis were used to directly contact realms beyond the material Incidentally, nowadays we say hypnosis but mesmerism was the term used back then, coming from the Austrian physician, Fran [...]

    2. So I don t know what to think Kinda liked it Kinda didn t Even when I don t like his stories much, I still like his brain So there s that.

    3. Of these latter, those who doubt, are your mere doubters by profession an unprofitable and disrepurtable tribe. That sentence is dripping with scorn and I love it I m not a historian I know general historical facts and ideas, but I can t tell you specifics I do know that mesmerism was a fad around this time period It s not that surprising that Poe would be interested in this, given his taste for the strange and unknown What s most interesting to me, is that Poe chose to have the doctor and his me [...]

    4. A sick dying man is hypnotized, a state which is halfway between life and death In this state, he s able to view understand things that he wouldn t otherwise be able With this enhanced understanding, the man answers questions about God, the universe, and spirits.

    5. He s talking about spiritual stuff, how he veiwed man s relationship to all that is and his conception of god Its really sweet.

    6. Interesting philosophical discourse, dabbling into unknowingly, of course quantum physics higher dimensions at least in my interpretation.

    7. Spoiler alertThis short story takes place in a trance and is an open forum for Poe to discuss and rationalize the beliefs of the time that concreted the scientific and religious worldviews The speaker is a mesmer who puts a regular, sickly client into a trance at the client s will The client stated that he felt he understood greater things and since he was faltering in health, he wanted to make sure he got his statement out The mesmer complies, and asks him numerous questions about the workings [...]

    8. Once again, Edgar Allen Poe manipulated the supernatural into a riveting short story in Mesmeric Revelation There was an aura of foreboding when the narrator convinced his dying friend to be hypnotized on the eve of his death to see what would happen When the man agreed, I instantly flashed to Mary Shelley s similar fascination with manipulation of humans after death in the Gothic classic, Frankenstein A few hours into the hypnosis, the man stated he was dead Dead, and yet, speaking The unimagin [...]

    9. I m giving this story 4 stars because even though practically all of it was beyond the scope of my understanding, it was obvious that this is an incredibly profound piece of writing There were some ideas that I was able to understand and found to be incredible, and the ending alone added an extra star to my review It is incredibly obvious that Poe was a genius both and intellectual genius and a literary genius I would recommend that people read this, but just know that it s going to make you wan [...]

    10. One of Poe s obscure stories and for good reason It isn t his typical story that takes the reader on a journey of terror and wonder This short story feels like a fictive case study or thought experiment than a story Nonetheless it sets forth some interesting ideas pertaining to metaphysics If metaphysics and existentialism interest you, you d probably enjoy this story.

    11. If you want to be bored, go ahead and read Mesmeric Revelation, a story of a man on his deathbed, who is hypnotized and talks about nature, God, and the universe It might sound interesting to you, but the language is quite thick and probably comprehensible to those who are familiar with physics and philosophy all rolled in one For me, it s mostly who cares All in all, skip this one.

    12. This is a story where a man who is close to death is put in a state of sleep waking He and the narrator discuss the universe, God, and other mysteries At the end, we are left to conclude if the man was really sleep waking or just talking from beyond the grave.

    13. Interesting premise, but unfortunately fell a bit short for me due to the last part which I felt was oppressive instead of openly enticing Missed opportunity

    14. A dialogue between a dying patient and a hypnotist trying to decipher the puzzle of afterlife and God.

    15. This one goes hand in hand with the Facts in the Case of M Valdemar It is intellectual and not so much of a story Pretty interesting though.

    16. EAP explores metaphysical questions in this account of a man under hypnosis EAP fast becomes the king of bullshitters in my eyes, thus further explaining his mastery of the fiction form.

    17. this was interesting but not that good this wasn t a short story but a dialogue between P and V about God, soul, matter, mind
