    About Author

    1. 1 bestselling author of the Aleksandr Talanov thriller series, about a former KGB colonel whose past will not leave him alone.Talanov the character was inspired by an actual KGB agent who leaked word out of Moscow back in the 1980s that James was on a KGB watchlist for his smuggling activities behind the old Iron Curtain.Talanov s debut thriller, Department Thirteen, was voted the Best Thriller of 2011 by USA Book News, after which it won gold medals in the 2012 Independent Publisher IPPY Book Awards and the 2012 Next Generation Indie Book Awards. In 1991, James was diagnosed with cancer and given eighteen months to live after an eleven hour operation in Australia, where doctors removed a tumor the size of an orange from his face Beating the odds is about making any and all changes necessary to win the fight, he says.At a low point in his writing career, he applied for a customer service job with a large company in Australia, where he was living at the time He was refused, not because he lacked skills, but because he was too ugly, a reference to the facial scars from his successful cancer operation At the time, it was a kick in the guts, he says, because we really needed the money But if I had been hired, I would not have persevered with my writing to become a bestsellig author He has since dedicated his promotional book tours to that moment by calling them his Too Ugly Tours, as a reminder that the hard knocks of life are sometimes blessings in disguise. He and his Australian wife, Wendy, a former triathlon winner, live in Austin, Texas.

    1. This is a Reading Good Books review In compliance with FTC guidelines, it should be noted that I received the book for free through First Reads. This book reminded me of the TV show 24 Fast paced and unpredictable And the story was interesting All the talk about the KGB, espionage, deceit, and spy games it got me hooked It had a very engaging cast of characters I wish some of those introduced early in the story stuck around until the end, or maybe an update on what they were doing at least Talano [...]

    2. I was really very happy with Department Thirteen I wish I had it on my kindle so I could save some of the quotations in it the book is chock full of wonderful lines.Turner really lets you get to know the characters in depth I can t think of many books that bring characters to life like this they really seem real I was almost convinced that Talanov and his wife were real You can tell that Turner knows what he s writing about, too, which really adds to the book s overall appeal.I would love to see [...]

    3. Department ThirteenBy James Houston TurnerDepartment Thirteen, the USA Book News Best Thriller of 2011 and book 1 in the Talanov thriller series, wins a gold medal the 2012 Independent Publisher IPPY Book Awards thriller suspense , AND a gold medal in the 2012 Indie Book Awards action adventure , with author JAMES HOUSTON TURNER flying to New York to attend the award ceremonies Wow Talanov is something else For the men, he s a role model, maybe even of what you should not become For women, he is [...]

    4. From my blog 4 1 2 So amazing, what a thrilling rush, non stop action, thought provoking and brilliant characters Talanov, the ex secret agent is my favourite character this year so far, love him He is like a cat, has 9 lives, this was my only complaint, one to many close calls during his run for life adventure or is it that he is just that good I have never read an espionage book that I can think of and thriller is my favourite genre, crazy right Well, this book had a great opening and did not [...]

    5. This is simply a masterpiece on espionage, a very intense thriller, like the good ones from the old days, when John le Carr , Ian Fleming and Frederick Forsyth were the master writers of espionage Now the world has a new master The story is superb and the characters very well develop The plot is simple an ex KGB agent Aleksandr Talanov lives in Australia with his wife Andrea During a farewell reception at his home in Sydney they are planning moving to USA for friends ex KGB agents and , their g [...]

    6. Very good read I really enjoyed the storyline, layer upon layers, and the characters than held their own.Because of his past, Talanov was so careful to avoid becoming too close to anyone and when someone finally breaks throught the walls he had erected around his life and heart, his fears come true His past finds him and threatens to destroy everything.Well written and a blast to read, James Houston takes you on an adventure of a retired KGB spy, who defected to Australia when his department di [...]

    7. This was a faced paced book with lots of twists and turns that kept me wanting to read The characters were all well written and you either like them or you don t There was a lot of action and it reminded me of a James Bond movie I m not crazy about JB, but loved Talanov He was unstoppable, and there was nothing I didn t like about him. This is the first book I ve read that had the KGB in the story line, and I loved reading about their involvement with Talanov It added so much to the book If you r [...]

    8. The only real complaint I had was the review on the front of the book gives away who lives and who dies Other than that it was your basic hunted ex spy book with a few good twists and turns The characters were well defined and easy to keep up with and the story line kept my interest Although I wished the review wasn t on the front cover I do agree with the reviewer in that I d like to see these characters again.
